Sony to Say Goodbye to its Floppy Disk Next Year

The recent technology keeps improving from time to time. Computer is one of many products of technology that also endures tremendous development. Speaking of computing stuff, you may remember one part that used to be so useful but has been forgotten now. Yes, it is floppy disk.

Floppy disk starts to become such an obsolete device and lately Sony has announced that it will end the manufacturing of floppy disk in the early of next year. Sony informed that learning the decreasing demand of its floppy disks especially in Japan, the only country Sony still sells the device, it will end the sale next March 2011.

Accordingly, in the previous year, the amount of floppy disk on the market reached 12 million disks and Sony owned a 70 percent share. The Sony floppy disks are still available in many central Tokyo electronic stores. It is said that most of the customers are legacy equipment users come from research or education sectors.

In the past, floppy disk reached its top of popularity in the mid-nineties and it offered the storage space of 1.44MB. It began less popular when CD-R and CD-RW came to the horizon and offered the consumers with a higher capacity. Compared to the floppy disk, the CD-R and CD-RW are able to present the 650MB of storage space which is more reliable than the floppy disk.

Today, people seems like really forgetting the floppy disk since the USB memory sticks surprised the market with its massive storage space and it has become the most popular device to transport data nowadays.
