Windows Becomes Friendlier Now

Windows in still in its effort to gain the popularity that once lost by keep designing and improving the products and the operating system for their users. The fact shows that open source software has been more compatible with Windows from time to time. As quoted from Geeknet statistic data, the open source software that run under Windows operating system had reached 82% by 2009. Of course this has really become surprising news in the software market, especially the Windows itself.

The compatibility clearly takes important part for the continuance of Windows’ rise. One significant thing noted from the Geeknet data is about the percentage rise of open source software variants which were ‘friendly’ to Windows. This rise is a great improvement seeing that the percentage of Windows ‘friendly’ software in 2005 was only 72%. Surely, many observers will keep updated to Windows’ next plan.

Senior Director of Platform Strategy Microsoft, Scott Colisson, as quoted from Softpedia, Sunday (14/3/2010), explained that according to the percentage, there were around 350.000 open source projects that are obviously incompatible to Windows. If the calculation keeps stable or even increase, Microsoft will seem welcome a new brighter day.

Collisson didn’t deny the fact that the open source developers are recently in ‘agnostic’ phase because the developers are also targeting Windows users. He argued that it gives indication toward the idea that right now many developers have put in mind regarding the runtimes management effectiveness and the language scripting availability.

Furthermore, it has been described the 23 of 25 most downloaded open source programs from SourceForge are able to run on Windows. Collison stated this phenomenon was interesting knowing that from the research conducted it is revealed that Windows is the only operating system that is able to operate 10 SourceForge top-downloaded applications.
