The Significant Rise and Fall of Games Sales

The development in technology has influence the development of game world to become more rapid from time to time. Back to passing years, video games were the favorite for many people from children to adults and along with the development of the game technology, the way the game has been presented to audiences have been changing as well.

The latest form of game, like Xbox 360 from Microsoft is one of new phenomenon for many game fans. In fact, its sales gained 88% to 451.700 devices right after the newest series, which has the slimmer design but a larger hard drive, is firstly introduced. In fact, it is reported that since the phenomenal Halo 3 sales in September 2007 which became the largest sales during the non-holiday month, this Xbox sales is the largest sales for Washington-based company’s Xbox 360.

Apart from the successful sales of Xbox 360, the United States sales of the video games was unfortunately falling approximately 6 percent in June to $1.1 billion. This drawback occurred when Nintendo Co., Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. consoles were not able to offset the weak game purchases.

According to NPD, in June a slight percentage rise of 16% was gained after Nintendo sold 422.500 Wii consoles in US. This was the rise noted from the previous year. Still in the same month, Sony’s Playstation 3 sales in Tokyo were increasing 85% to 304.800 units as well.

On the other hand, a significant sales fall happened to Nintendo’s DS handheld video-game player lower to third position after the latest game was introduced. Lately, the Kyoto as Japan-based company  has introduced the newest game unit that is designed with 3 cameras, a wireless connection, and a screen that is equipped with 3D technology that doesn’t need the special glasses support to see the 3D images. Moreover, it seems that the company’s plan to start rolling out the 3DS units to the market before March 2011 may result in a 39% decrease in May.

Obviously, the sales percentage fall of 15% to $531 million is something that is really disappointing but on the contrary it has become significant increase for larger game publishers for they have gained high sales percentage. From the market, it is seen that there are some games that are still gaining good sales like New York-based Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.’s Red Dead Redemption is still positioned as the top-selling video game for a second month with the accumulation of 963 million units sold, whereas Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 have 548 million units purchased.
